Leopard’s Roar
Excerpt from Daniel Everhart and the Skylands of Caterra
Daniel speaking:
Before long, twilight clings with its last strength to the south point of Jiaoche. I’ve positioned two-dozen sensors and demodulators when movement catches my attention. Panicked stillness settles around my heart.
“I see you,” says a voice in my head. It’s muted, so I can’t tell if it’s male or female, but I understand it perfectly.
I take a step forward, too freaked out to stay still. “Show yourself so I can see you.’”
A rock dislodges from the steep cliff and echoes downward. A gray rabbit bounds from a bush straight through my legs.
Caught off guard, I jump and struggle to keep my balance.
Seconds later, a leopard explodes from the darkness. Before I can move, the leopard roars, leaps, and pushes me over the side.
I fall . . .
. . . and fall . . .
. . . and fall . . .
