Excerpt from Daniel Everhart and the Skylands of Caterra: Guarinot

By now, the line has shrunk to three. A middle-aged couple oozing enough PDA to get a month of detention—but hey, go old people—and an older man wearing dark glasses and a hat, leaning on a cane.

“Last tour of the day,” the older guy says. “Looks like you four make us a group of seven. First time here?”

“Um, yes sir.” Cypress nods, and the little braids on either side of her face swing. “We’re hoping to see the view from up top.”

“Yes, quite extraordinary.” The old man sounds hoarse and weak, like he’d be better off in a wheelchair. How on Earth—or Caterra—does he expect to make it to the top of the tower without a wrench?

“I’ve seen it before,” the man continues, “and my old legs aren’t what they used to be. I’ll sit this one out. You can join those two lovebirds up there. I’ll come another day.” He turns and hobbles off.

“Something’s wrong,” Cypress whispers.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“We don’t use the word “lovebirds” on Caterra. That’s an Earth term.”

I watch the man walk away, and my spine gets the tingles. “I recognize that walk. Alyx, has Arch Tantalus escaped?”

“Impossible,” comes Alyx’s voice through the headpiece. “But I will check.”

“What’s with those two?” Brynlin whispers, nodding to the PDA couple making out. “Something doesn’t look . . . normal to me.”

“It could be your new normal, if you’d give me a chance,” Skyjo tells her.

Excerpt from Daniel Everhart and the Skylands of Caterra: Guarinot

The ring pulls my arm away from the dolmen. Across the meadow, another red glow moves toward us. A figure emerges from behind the tree trunks.

”We’ve got company.” My ring’s glow intensifies.

Bram extracts his sword and faces the intruder, who’s standing still in the moonlight shadows of the forest canopy.

“Daniel, it’s the girl from the waterfall!” Elaina touches Bram on the shoulder. “It’s okay.”

“Your sword will not be necessary.” The girl moves closer. “I am Niobe Catia of Zhane.”

I move next to Elaina. “Why are you here?”

The girl looks tired. Her dark, silky face holds little expression. “For two years, I’ve been imprisoned by pirates who have used my abilities for gain and plunder.” Her eyes focus on some point beyond any of us as she speaks. “Then, three nights past, a violent storm erupted on the sea. The wind screamed its rage, and I was plucked from the deck and placed in a boat, which moved away on its own. Within a breath, the water was smooth, the wind was gone, and the pirates’ screams for help faded. Then a voice said, ‘Sleep.’ When I awoke, the familiar sound of the Zhane River welcomed me home. I asked myself, how is this possible? And the voice spoke again. ‘You are needed at the dolmens. He has come.’”

I take a step toward Niobe. “Why you?”

“I am the dolmen keeper, like my mother before me. For six thousand years the honor has been passed from matriarch to daughter. It is a blessing . . .” Niobe steps closer. “And a curse.”

I see her face for the first time and remember the veil.

“We are marked from birth by our eyes.” Niobe walks past me to the dolmen, but her eyes seem like they’re seeing beyond this dimension.

Dang. I think she’s blind.

Excerpt from ‘Daniel Everhart and the Skylands of Caterra’ book one: Guarinot

“Hey freak-eyes!” I’m halfway up the sidewalk, dazed by this wacked-out thought, when a familiar voice sounds behind me.

I turn, and Fane’s eyeballs bulge like they’re about to explode. His undersized brother trails behind, with Smudge bringing up the rear. “Just so you know”—spit slings as the oversized brute hisses at me—“all restrictions are off.” I stand my ground and stare right back.

Fane gets right up in my face. “You’re gonna die, punk.”

“If you keep it up, we’ll be attending your funeral,” I say. “Why don’t you leave the dark side while there’s still time?” I don’t know when I got gutsy. Or stupid. Mostly stupid.

“Look, you little gnat. I could squash you right now if —”

“If what? Everybody wasn’t watching?” I wait for Fane’s reply.

Without another word, he shoves his way past me and heads off to detention.

“Hey Fane,” I call. “How was Russia? Or don’t you remember?” I know. I know! Stupider than a drunk monkey.

Fane does a one-eighty and heads back.

That’s when the unthinkable happens. Lenny—skinny little runt—steps in front of me and grabs Fane. “No!” Lenny shoves him up against the foyer wall. “That’s enough. Let’s do our time and get out of it.”

I stare like an ape. A crowd gathers, and we all just stand there, watching this monumental, historical event. Lenny just stopped Fane. Who would’ve thought?

“Onella,” Alyx pushes the front of the recliner down with his legs. “You still have not recovered? You need a regorness yielder. It will give you your strength back in no time. Daniel, would you escort Brynlin back to Caterra? She will acquire one for us.”

“What’s a regorness yielder?” Joost asks.

“It’s like a cross between an Earth coconut and a banana on steroids, only way sweeter,” Cypress answers. “It sure helped me.”

Moments later, Elaina curls her fingers around the coconut-shaped fruit.

Brynlin plops next to her and shows her how to peel the layers back. “Trust me. You’re gonna love it.”

Elaina takes a bite, then lifts her eyebrows in delight.

Watching her eat makes me hungry, but I’m not about to say anything. She might offer to share, and she needs it for herself.
