“Ladies, ladies . . .” Skyjo struts beside us and pulls back his jacket to reveal two laser guns. He flips one in the air, spins it twice, and returns it to its holster. “Don’t worry about a thing. I’m here to protect you.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Brynlin replies. “I don’t think those pea shooters will be necessary. If there’re any confrontations, Cypress and I will handle it.”

“No worries Bry. I’ll be your backup.” Skyjo flips the other pistol in the air and shoots a dozen bursts into the trunk of a large tree, forming a perfect circular pattern.

I duck, cover my head with my arms, and flinch at every shot. “Whoa! Nice shooting.” I’m impressed. And surprised. At least this kid can hit his mark.
